Books Fail to Open in EasyReader When File Paths Contain Non‑Alphanumeric Characters

Issue in EasyReader Windows 12.04 Prevents Books from Loading if Windows Profile or File Path Includes Non‑English Characters

In ER Win 12.04, users may encounter an issue where books fail to load into Reader View if the Windows user profile name or the monitored folder path contains non‑English or non‑alphanumeric characters (anything outside a–z or 0–9). When this occurs, the application displays an error message and no content is loaded.

This behavior is specific to version 12.04 and does not occur in 12.03 or earlier.

Symptoms

Affected users may experience one or more of the following:

  • Books do not load into Reader View.

  • An error message appears when attempting to open a book.

  • Folder monitors fail when pointing to directories containing characters such as “å”, “ö”, “é”, etc.

  • The issue occurs even with valid book files if the Windows profile name includes non‑English characters.

Example Scenario

A Premium user sets a folder monitor to:

C:\temp\böcker\

Attempting to load a book from this path triggers the error and prevents the book from opening.

Workaround

Until a permanent fix is released, users can:

Revert to ER Win 12.03

Version 12.03 is available in the legacy downloads section and does not exhibit this issue. Reverting restores normal functionality for all file paths, including those containing non‑English characters.

Resolution Status

A fix is currently in development and will be included in:

  • ER Win 12.05 (stable release), or

  • 12.05 Beta (for users who wish to test the fix early)

Users on 12.04 will need to apply the workaround until 12.05 becomes available.
