How to configure Safe Exam Browser to be accessible to SuperNova

Out of the box Safe Exam Browser is not compatible with any assistive technology. It needs to be specially configured to allow assistive technology tools, such as SuperNova, to run alongside it.

To enable SuperNova to be able to be used with Safe Exam Browser the Exam Administrator needs to use its configuration tool SEBConfigTool.exe:
  1. With the SEBConfigTool open go to File ->New Settings (or else, open an existing settings file to modify).
  2. Navigate to the Security tab. In the Kiosk Mode drop-down menu, select Disable Explorer Shell. This is a mandatory prerequisite for any assistive technology to function correctly.
  3. Click on the Applications tab in the left-hand navigation pane. This is the interface for managing which processes are allowed or prohibited during a secure session.
  4. Under the Permitted Processes section, click the "+" (Add Application) button. This will open a file selection dialog box.
  5. Browse to your SuperNova installation folder (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Dolphin\SnovaSuite2404).
  6. Select the SuperNova application executable (e.g. snova.exe) and click Open.
  7. An snova.exe application rule will now appear in the list of permitted processes. When you select it, a panel on the right will display its configuration parameters. These include details like the executable name, path, and several important options. Make sure that the Autostart and Allow running in background checkboxs are both enabled because the user's assistive technology must be initialised and have its system-level hooks in place before Safe Exam Browser fully engages its security lockdown.
  8. The Exam Administrator can then save those settings to a file, such as Exam_SuperNova.seb, for use with all students who need to use SuperNova for exams in the future.
