SuperNova & Dolphin ScreenReader Announce "Normal" When Navigating Web Pages
How to stop SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader from announcing "normal" while reading or navigating web content
Some users of SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader may notice that the software announces the word "normal" when navigating through web pages, documents, or other text-based content.
This behaviour is typically related to Text Style Announcements, a feature that provides spoken feedback about formatting changes such as bold, italic, underline, and font weight. When enabled, SuperNova and Dolphin can announce when text returns to a normal font weight, resulting in the spoken feedback "normal".
While this feature can be useful for users who need detailed formatting information, others may find the announcements unnecessary or distracting during day-to-day navigation.
Symptoms
Users may experience the following behaviour:
- SuperNova or Dolphin announces "normal" while moving through web page content.
- The announcement occurs when navigating between text with different font weights.
- The issue is most noticeable when browsing websites or reading formatted documents.
- No application errors or performance issues are present.
Cause
The announcement is generated by the Weight Change option within the Text Style Announcements settings.
When enabled, SuperNova or Dolphin reports changes in text weight, such as:
- Bold
- Normal
As a result, the software may announce "normal" whenever the cursor moves from bold text back to standard text formatting.
Resolution
To stop SuperNova or Dolphin from announcing "normal", disable the Weight Change announcement option.
Steps
- Press CTRL + SPACEBAR to open the SuperNova Control Panel.
- Press ALT + S to open Speech Settings.
- Navigate to and select Text Style Announcements.
- In the upper-right corner, select the Dolphin Cursor tab.
- In the Announcements section, locate Weight Change.
- Untick the Weight Change option.
- Select OK to save your changes.
Expected Result
After disabling Weight Change:
- SuperNova and Dolphin will no longer announce "normal" when navigating content.
- Browsing web pages should provide less formatting-related speech feedback.
- Other speech output and screen reader functionality will continue to operate normally.
Additional Information
Text Style Announcements can be customised to suit individual preferences. Users who require detailed formatting feedback may wish to keep certain announcement options enabled while disabling only those that are not needed.
This allows for a more personalised reading and navigation experience without affecting overall accessibility functionality.
