SuperNova Compatibility with Grammarly
Understanding Known Issues Between SuperNova/Dolphin ScreenReader and Grammarly in Microsoft Word
Overview
Some SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader users may experience performance issues when using Grammarly alongside Microsoft Word. These issues can include SuperNova becoming unresponsive or, in some cases, crashing entirely while Grammarly is active.
This article explains why these issues occur and the current status of a workaround or fix.
Cause of the Compatibility Issue
Both SuperNova/Dolphin ScreenReader and Grammarly use a technique known as hooking to interact with and modify the document area within Microsoft Word.
-
SuperNova/Dolphin ScreenReader uses hooking to track text, provide speech and braille output, and enhance accessibility.
-
Grammarly uses hooking to analyse text, apply suggestions, and display corrections.
Because both tools attempt to hook into the same document structures at the same time, they can interfere with each other. This conflict may lead to:
-
SuperNova hanging or freezing
-
SuperNova crashing
-
Reduced responsiveness in Word
These behaviours are more likely to occur when Grammarly is actively analysing or updating text.
Current Status
At present, there is no workaround that reliably prevents these compatibility issues when Grammarly is used with SuperNova or Dolphin ScreenReader in Word.
Our development team is actively investigating this under bug reference OT50759.
This article will be updated as soon as a workaround or fix is identified.
Recommendation
Until a fix is identified, users who rely on SuperNova or Dolphin ScreenReader for accessibility may wish to avoid using Grammarly within Microsoft Word to prevent instability.
