Why does SuperNova only announce "deleted" and not the deleted character in Microsoft Word?

When using Microsoft OneCore voices in Office 365, SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader may announce only "deleted" during text editing instead of reporting the character that was removed.

 Overview

We have identified an issue affecting SuperNova and Dolphin ScreenReader version 25 when using Microsoft OneCore speech synthesizers and character echo within Microsoft Word for Microsoft 365.

When deleting text using the Backspace or Delete keys, the screen reader announces only "deleted" rather than providing the expected feedback indicating which character has been removed. This can make text editing more difficult for users who rely on character speech feedback to verify changes as they type.

Symptoms

When editing a Microsoft Word document with a Microsoft OneCore voice selected:

  • Deleting characters only announces "deleted".
  • The deleted character is not spoken.
  • The issue occurs even when Character Echo and Character and Word Echo are enabled.
  • The behavior affects text editing accuracy for users who rely on spoken confirmation when correcting text.

Example

Expected speech feedback:

"a deleted"

Actual speech feedback:

"deleted"

Workaround

To temporarily restore announcement of deleted characters, switch from a Microsoft OneCore Synthesizer to Vocalizer Expressive.

Steps to Change Synthesizer

  1. Open Speech from the SuperNova menu.
  2. Select Voice Preferences.
  3. Choose Synthesizer Configuration.
  4. Select Select Synthesizer.
  5. Choose Vocalizer Expressive from the list of available synthesizers.
  6. Apply the changes and return to Microsoft Word.

After switching to Vocalizer Expressive, deleted characters should be announced as expected during text editing.
