Microsoft Office applications extremely slow to open on machines that have an integrated Intel UHD video card

Symptoms include Microsoft Word taking 30 to 40 seconds to load while SuperNova is running, but only 5 to 6 seconds to load when SuperNova is not running. In addition, the user interface of Microsoft Word may be drawn/updated very slowly.

Note: Other applications, such as Windows File Explorer, may also suffer from responsiveness issues when arrowing through files and folders.

Solution

Instead of using the Intel UHD video drivers distributed by Windows Update, or Dell's or HP’s web sites, affected users should try installing the very latest Intel video drivers either by using the following automatic update tool on Intel's web site:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/products/80939/graphics.html

or by downloading and installing the latest Intel video drivers manually from:

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/articles/000005629/graphics.html

Older Intel UHD video driver versions, such as version 30.x.x.x, are known to cause issues.

Versions 31.0.101.2115 and above work much better.

At the time of writing (April 2023) version 31.0.101.4255 is the latest version.

The Intel Driver & Support Assistant (Intel's automatic update tool) can cause a slight impact on start-up performance.

After updating to the latest Intel drivers, you would like to prevent the Intel Driver & Support Assistant from launching on start-up. Please set the start-up type for the following services to 'Manual': 'Intel(R) Driver & Support Assistant', 'Intel(R) Driver & Support Assistant Updater'.
